Free Tutoring for Recovery School District Students

August 28, 2011

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Our overarching goal at the Recovery School District (RSD) is to ensure that every child succeeds in school! Comprised of “schools in need of improvement” the RSD has undertaken a number of initiatives to advance this cause, such as extended day, extended school year, and tutoring. Now, you can help your child succeed in school by signing up for free tutoring! This is a great opportunity to help your child in school without any cost to you in the areas of math, reading, and language arts as a result of the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Your child can receive Supplemental Educational Services/academic tutoring to help him or her do better in school and on state tests.

You can choose a free tutoring program that best meets your child’s needs from the list of approved Supplemental Educational Services (SES) providers in your area. These programs have been approved by the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and will provide your child with tutoring that is coordinated with what is being taught in school. The choice is yours, but there is no obligation to enroll your child in SES.

Click the link below for a list of SES providers/tutoring programs, a description of each program, qualifications of the tutors, and information about each program’s effectiveness. Services will be offered at the location indicated. The provider list also indicates the programs that serve students with disabilities or limited English proficiency. Please note that these are the only providers for Recovery School District at this time.

When deciding which tutoring program is best for your child, consider these questions:

When and where will the tutoring take place (at school, community center)?

How often and for how many hours in total will your child be tutored?

What programs, by grade levels and subject areas, are available for your child?

What type of instruction will the tutor use (small group, one-on-one, or the computer)?

What are the tutor’s qualifications?

Can the tutor help if your child has disabilities or is learning English?

Is transportation available to and from where the tutoring will take place? Please, note that transportation to the tutor and to your home may not be provided.

There are a limited number of spaces in the SES program, so every child that applies may not be able to enroll. Every parent that is interested should apply for their child. If more students request tutoring than can be served through available funding, priority will be given to lowest-performing students from low income families per compliance with federal law.

Enclosed is an application for your convenience. Applications are also available at your child’s school, at the Recovery School District Central Office located at 1641 Poland Avenue, and may also be obtained from our website at www.rsdla.net.

Tutoring services will begin October 17, 2011 and the application period is September 2, 2011 to October 7, 2011. In the event that spaces remain for additional students, a second round of applications will be accepted in January 2012.

Please call Lori Taylor at 504-373-6200if you have any questions about these services. However, if you would like to select a tutor now, you can fill out the enclosed provider selection form and return it to Lori Taylor at the Recovery School District. Applications are due by October 7, 2011. You will receive a letter from the District indicating whether or not the application for your child has been approved. Information about start dates, services, and location will be included.
