Supplemental Education Services

The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act provides new education options for many families. This federal law allows parents to choose other public schools or take advantage of free tutoring if their child attends a school that needs improvement. Also, parents can choose another public school if the school their child attends is unsafe. The law also supports the growth of more independent charter schools, funds some services for children in private schools, and provides certain protections for homeschooling parents. Finally, it requires that states and local school districts provide information to help parents make informed educational choices for their child.

Supplemental Education Services Available

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Our overarching goal at the Recovery School District (RSD) is to ensure that every child succeeds in school! Comprised of “schools in need of improvement,” the RSD has undertaken a number of initiatives to advance this cause such as extended day, extended school year, and tutoring. Now, you can help your child succeed in school-sign up for free tutoring! This is a great opportunity to help your child in school without any cost to you in the areas of math, reading, and language arts as a result of the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Your child can receive Supplemental Educational Services/academic tutoring to help him or her do better in school and on state tests.

You can choose a free tutoring program that best meets your child’s needs from the list of approved Supplemental Educational Services (SES) providers in your area. These programs have been approved by the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and will provide your child with tutoring that is coordinated with what is being taught in school. The choice is yours, but there is no obligation to enroll your child in SES.

A list of SES providers/tutoring programs is below. The list gives you a description of each program, qualifications of the tutors, and information about each program’s effectiveness. Services will be offered at the location indicated. It also indicates the programs that serve students with disabilities or limited English proficiency. Please, note that these are the only providers for Recovery School District at this time.

When deciding which tutoring program is best for your child, you may want to consider these questions:

  • When and where will the tutoring take place (at school, community center)?
  • How often and for how many hours in total will your child be tutored?
  • What programs, by grade levels and subject areas, are available for your child?
  • What type of instruction will the tutor use (small group, one-on-one, or the computer)?
  • What are the tutor’s qualifications?
  • Can the tutor help if your child has disabilities or is learning English?
  • Is transportation available to and from where the tutoring will take place? Please, note that transportation to the tutor and to your home may not be provided.

There are a limited number of spaces in the SES program, so every child that applies may not be able to enroll. Every parent that is interested should apply for their child. If more students request tutoring than can be served through available funding, priority will be given to lowest-performing students from low income families per compliance with federal law.

There will be two sessions of services. The Fall session is to begin October 18, 2010 and the application period is August 18, 2010 to October 1, 2010. The Spring Session will begin February 7, 2011 and the application period will occur January 6, 2011 to January 20, 2011.

Please call Lori Taylor if you have any questions about these services. To further assist you in selecting a provider, you may attend a Providers Fair scheduled for September 18, 2010. See enclosed flyer. However, if you would like to select a tutor now, you can fill out the enclosed provider selection form and return it to Lori Taylor at the Recovery School District. Applications are due by October 1, 2010. You will receive a letter from the District indicating whether or not the application for your child has been approved. Information about start dates, services, and location will be included.
