Advance Baton Rouge Charter School Association and the Recovery School District Announce Plan to Increase Achievement

Baton Rouge, LA — The Advance Baton Rouge Charter School Association (ABRCSA) and the Recovery School District of Louisiana (RSD) today announced a new initiative that will increase the academic achievement of students in East Baton Rouge and Pointe Coupee parishes.

The jointly-developed plan will provide resources and support to the schools and students of ABRCSA immediately, while over time transitioning governance and oversight to charter school managers who have achieved significant academic gains in Louisiana and across the country.

“ABR has stabilized schools that were struggling for decades,” said RSD Superintendent John White. “But we need to do more. It’s time to take student achievement to another level, and I’m thankful to ABR for working with us on a plan that will do that.”

Beginning in January, ABR and the RSD organizations will begin the process of transitioning oversight and support for Prescott Business Academy and Pointe Coupee Central High School to the Recovery School District. The RSD gradually will increase services at both schools through June 2012.  The RSD will provide joint support for Glen Oaks Institute of Science, Lanier Charter Elementary and Dalton Charter Elementary through 2012 and begin transitioning governance in 2013.

“We are excited about the potential of the joint agreement,” said Jeff English, Board President for Advance Baton Rouge Charter School Association.  “The mission of the Association has always been to raise student achievement – putting their needs first. This plan provides us with new tools and puts us one step closer to fulfilling our mission.  ”

The Advance Baton Rouge Charter School Association and the Recovery School District will host parent meetings later this month at Prescott and Pointe Coupee Central to explain the impact the plan will have on students.

The meetings are scheduled as follows:

  • Prescott Business Academy - Tuesday, Nov. 29  at 5:30 p.m.
  • Pointe Coupee Central High School – Monday, Nov. 28 at 5:30 p.m.

Future meetings to discuss the impact of the plan for Dalton, Glen Oaks, and Lanier will be announced soon.

For information, parents are asked to contact the Advance Baton Rouge Central Office at 225-436-3072.
