A.P. Tureaud Elementary School in the Recovery School District is home to the number one First In Math Team in Louisiana.

The First in Math Program, an innovative approach to mathematics around the state. In addition, A.P. Tureaud is also home to the number one, two and three First in Math Players in the state. education, provides a web-based format that motivates children to sharpen basic math skills, such as computational fluency, problem solving, number sense and critical thinking.

Students in the First in Math program earn electronic award stickers as they solve problems of increasing difficulty, beginning with one-step addition and culminating with complex algebra. Stickers are combined for a classroom's team total.

Thirty-five Recovery School District campuses have joined more than 100 schools in Louisiana already participating in the First In Math Program this year. Over all, RSD students have solved more than 3.6 million math problems on the First In Math website since the beginning of the school year -- an average of 1,100 problems per student.

Anne Lind, Louisiana representative for Pennsylvania-based Suntex International, creators of the First In Math Program, was on hand to conduct the First in Math Awards Ceremony on May 17 at A. P. Tureaud. Perretta White is the principal.
