What are charter schools?
Charter schools are public schools that are independently operated and publicly funded. As public schools, charter schools are open to all students. They do not charge fees for admission and cannot discriminate when making enrollment and admissions decisions.
The application process for charters is underway. The next phase of the charter application process will be the applicant evaluation, which takes place August 23-October 2. This process includes a due diligence review, site visits (if applicable), and applicant interviews. The state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education will approve new charters in October 2009. Approved charters will begin operating in the 2010-2011 school year.
