Kiwanis of Pontchartrain’s BUGS (Bringing Up Grades) Club recently organized a Bug Mobile visit featuring an educational instructor from the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans. Kiwanis Pontchartrain started this BUGS Club this year to encourage low-achieving students to improve their grades by providing mentoring, encouragement, and enrichment activities as rewards.
Members of the BUGS Club at Sarah T. Reed Elementary School in New Orleans East were rewarded for improving their grades during second and third quarter with participation in the Bug Mobile visit followed by refreshments provided by Kiwanis Pontchartrain. “The students were able to learn and reinforce basic science principles about the structure and habits of insects and arachnids,” said Ann Legaux, BUGS Club Coordinator and also the counselor at Reed Elementary.
“They were also able to get up close looks at some common and exotic insects, and were encouraged to touch them as well. One particularly scary tarantula got both their attention and respect.”
